  • Photovoice project for DNP: A Comparison of Recommended Practice Guidelines for Health Care of the Homeless and the Current Health Status of Homeless Families in St. Paul, Minnesota as Assessed Through the Use of Photovoice Methodology’, 2010-May 2012. Principal Investigator.

  • Photovoice research:  ‘Health through Young Eyes:  A Photovoice project’, 2010-2011in a subsidized housing community. Principal Investigator (received grant for project).

  • Research on ‘Utilization and Perceptions of Healthcare by Senegalese Women during Pregnancy and Childbirth in a Small Rural Village’ summer, 2008, Senegal, Africa.

    • Principal Investigator,  private funding. The goal of this research was to understand women’s perspectives on utilization of healthcare services for Senegalese women in a rural village.

  • Research on ‘Utilization of Healthcare by Rural Indian Women During Pregnancy and Childbirth’ in India, summer of 2005.

    • Principal Investigator, private funding, Summer, 2005, India.  Masters project- The goal of this research was to understand women’s perspectives on utilization of healthcare services for Indian women in a rural village.

CLIINICAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • 2013: Received acceptance into the Edmond J Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program (VNF) at the Struthers Parkinson’s’ Disease Center in Minneapolis, MN for summer of 2013.  The program was an intense training program directed at faculty to learn more about Parkinson’s disease.  The program was approximately 6 months in length.

  • 2008-present: Developed partnerships within the community for service-based learning opportunities with the St. Paul Public Housing Agency and Public School districts within the Metro area to offer service-based learning opportunities for public health nursing students from Metropolitan State University (ongoing development).

  • 2008: Assisted in the development of the Wellness Center for the homeless in East St. Paul, Minnesota. The goal of this service-based learning opportunity is to utilize the principles of health promotion and disease prevention in working with the homeless population within the community.

  • Developed and implemented after school programs for 7th and 8th grade girls focusing on healthy life style choices. Grant monies received from Ecolab for programming.  Fall, 2006.

  • Assessment of Junior High School students. Goals:  to assist in understanding needs of students and development of resources.  Spring, 2006.

  • Assisted in development of workshops and after school programming for Violence Prevention, August 1992 to May 1995.

International presentations:

  • 3rd World Parkinson Congress, held at the Palais des congrès in Montréal, Canada, October 1-4, 2013. Experiencing Parkinson’s Disease:  A PhotoVoice Story.

  • Presidents Circle of Engagement Award:  This award is given to faculty at Metropolitan State University who have identified and initiated community partnerships, civic engagement, and have provided learning opportunities within their courses that leads to social transformation through a collaborative process within the community.
